One of my friends on facebook is all excited because she got a diamond engagement ring a few weeks ago. So, she even took a picture of her finger and put it as her profile pic. Now, don't get me wrong - I am happy for her that she found a good person and that the relationship is working. We all deserve a fair shot at love in life and everyone knows that life is generally pretty dull without someone around.

But with all that aside - what is with the diamond engagement ring??

I've never understood it. Marriage has huge legal benefits and ramifications. It is official. It is recognized by church and state. You get tax benefits. So, like any business with a profit on the end you are willing to make the initial investment.

But engagement? That I don't understand. Engagement is nothing but a pretend thing. There's no enforcing it, and no penalty if one of you decides to split. And who's is the ring if that happens? Is it the girls or the guys? We don't know because we don't have a prenup!

My point exactly. I'm probably going to save the diamond engagement ring for marriage.
